Description

Apollo 11 Flown American Flag with Copy of Handwritten Note of Provenance from Buzz Aldrin. A cloth 5.875" x 4" United States flag flown to the moon, along with the ankhs in the previous two lots, by Buzz Aldrin on Apollo 11 as a favor for a neighbor and close friend. He later returned the the ankhs taped to the inside of a 5.25" x 4.125" Apollo 11 foldover notecard along with this flag with the following handwritten note (a reproduction of which is included with this lot): "Dear Marty. Enclosed are your two crosses which landed on the moon 20 July 1969. Thanks for your felt but unseen help on our mission. May the Creator be with you on your travels in search of happiness. As ever. Buzz. P.S. The Flag went also." The outlines of the ankhs are visible on the note. The astronauts were allowed to carry certain personal items (many times as a favor for friends) in their Personal Preference Kit (PPK) on the missions. According to the note, a copy of which accompanies this lot, this flag "went also". Because it is not clear if he meant on the mission or on the actual moonlanding, we are describing this as flown only, not LM flown. A very desirable collectible from this landmark mission. One vertical fold, otherwise excellent.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
