First mission to utilize "insurance" covers
Apollo 11 Crew-Signed "Type Three" Insurance Cover with Mission
Insignia Cachet, Originally from the Personal Collection of Buzz
Aldrin. A philatelic cover with the "Apollo 8" 6¢ stamp (Scott
#1371) affixed bearing a pictorial machine cancellation from
Kennedy Space Center dated July 16, 1969, the day that Apollo 11
was launched. The cachet is a color mission insignia with no added
text. To the right are the neat blue felt tip signatures: "Neil
Armstrong", "Michael Collins" and "Buzz Aldrin".
This was purchased from Buzz Aldrin on the fifth anniversary of the
mission in 1974. In this auction's Internet Session is a Return
to Earth book signed by Aldrin for the same collector and at
the same time. Excellent.
Apollo 11 was the first flight in which insurance covers were utilized. They were produced for the crew to sign together before their launch to the moon, and then leave behind with their families as a form of insurance that could be sold should they fail to return. This is one of three "types" of Apollo 11 covers.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
