Description

Apollo 11 Crew-Signed "Type One" Insurance Cover Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, Signed and Certified. A philatelic cover, 6.5" x 3.625", with the "Apollo 8" 6ยข stamp (Scott #1371) affixed, machine canceled at Houston, Texas, on July 20, 1969, the day Apollo 11 landed on the moon. The color cachet features the text: "NASA Manned Spacecraft Center Stamp Club/ Official Commemorative Cover/ First Manned Lunar Exploration" above a colorful moon scene. It is beautifully signed to the right in blue felt tip: "Neil Armstrong" (cancellation over just a portion of his signature), "Michael Collins", and "Buzz Aldrin". Signed on the verso: "All the Best/ to Howard Weinberger-/ Mike Collins/ (Insurance Cover from my personal collection)" Since flying to the moon was considered a "high risk" activity by insurance companies, the astronauts would sign a quantity of these covers pre-flight to be left behind for family members to sell in case of a tragic accident. Apollo 11 was the first mission that made use of these covers. Excellent.
