Description

Apollo 10 Flown American Flag, Flown Illinois Flag, and Flown Embroidered Mission Insignia Patch on Crew-Signed Presentation Mat to the Mayor of Gene Cernan's Hometown, with Testimonial Program. A 14" x 11" mat board to which are mounted a 6.25" x 4" U.S. cloth flag, a 6" x 4" Illinois state flag, and a 4.125" x 4.125" shield-shape mission patch. At lower right is printed: "To Sigel Davis/ Mayor of Bellwood/ These Items Carried to the Moon/ on Apollo X/ May 18-26, 1969" and beneath that are the signatures of the crew: "Tom Stafford", "John Young", and "Gene Cernan". Though Gene Cernan was born in Chicago, he was raised in the town of Bellwood, Illinois. Mayor Sigel C. Davis welcomed the town's favorite son back to the area in late June 1969 with a function attended by 25,000 proud area citizens. Included in this lot is Mayor Davis's copy of an eight page program titled: "Testimonial June 29, 1969 Honoring Apollo 10 Crew". It is signed on the back cover authentically by Cernan and bears autopen signatures of Young and Stafford. Quite unusual to find three flown items on one presentation and a very desirable piece. The program is excellent. The Young and Cernan signatures on the mat have faded a bit but otherwise, it's excellent with none of the often-seen glue bleedthrough on the flags.
