Rare Apollo 1 (AS-204A) Checklist, signed by the crew

Apollo 1 Crew-Signed "Crew Abbreviated Checklist Mission AS-204A Apollo SC012", a Working Copy from a Lead Writer at North American Aviation. A 5.5" x 8.5" five-hole punched, staple-bound book of 94 pages on buff cardstock, published by North American Aviation, dated August 22, 1966, on the cover. "Prepared Under Direction of Mission Operations Branch Flight Crew Support Division" to be "...used as a work copy on a controlled basis." The main sections listed in the Contents page include: Prelaunch, Ascent and Orbital Insertion, CSM/S-IVB Earth Orbit and Separation Procedures, Systems Management, Telecommunications, Guidance and Control, Mission Operations, Deorbit and Entry, Postlanding, Abort Procedures, and Emergency Procedures.

This was owned and used by a Mr. Sharp, writer in the publications division (his name and extension are written on the back cover). The engineers and designers took the lead in assembling the checklist and incorporated comments and suggestions from the astronauts. At that point, the publication writers polished the document, conformed it to spec, and worked with the astronauts to confirm that the document was concise and accurate. This is one such working copy of the mission checklist. A later version of this same checklist was in the Apollo 1 capsule on the day of the tragic fire. There is a photo available (print included) of that later checklist in the burned-out rubble of the spacecraft. According to Mr. Sharp's widow, he left North American after the fire, devastated by the loss of his friends and the preventability of the incident. An incredible rarity, first time publicly offered. Possibly unique in private hands, almost certainly with the crew signatures. Dampstaining on front cover which affects the signatures, fine internally.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
