    Description

    "...that little blue-and-white marble"

Alan Bean Original 1983 Painting "Mother Earth," Acrylic on Masonite, Museum Framed. A gorgeous 24" x 30" painting, beautifully framed to an overall 29.5" x 35.5". Signed at lower right: "Alan Bean © 1983". The painting is of the planet earth as seen above the lunar horizon, very reminiscent of the extremely popular "Earthrise" photo taken by Apollo 8. This is a rare opportunity to own a large original painting from this amazingly talented explorer and artist; it is one of his earliest works. Ready to hang in your home or office. From a Texan's private collection. Excellent.

Alan Bean explains the story behind the painting as follows: "The planet Earth seems a long way off, because it is. About a quarter of a million miles off. From the Moon, the Earth appeared as a beautiful blue-and-white marble. Occasionally, there was a small, orange area visible. I knew the orange areas were deserts, but just which ones was extremely difficult to tell. When I wanted to know which desert I was looking at, I would ask mission control which ground station was tracking us. If they could see us, we could see them.

"The Moon, itself, was a foreboding place when viewed from orbit. Mostly gray with stark, angular mountains and deep, rough canyons and craters. It was as if nature had pounded the Moon again and again with a big, big hammer.

"In contrast, our Earth was beautiful - all shiny and bright. It was hard to believe that everybody I had ever known - or seen on TV - and the places they lived and played were all on that little blue-and-white marble. It's still hard to believe."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
