    Description

African Eclipse Cruise: Neil Armstrong's Personally-Owned "Shadow Chasers African Eclipse '73" Event Patch From The Armstrong Family Collection™, CAG Certified. A 4" x 4" cut edge, cheesecloth backed patch originally produced for the 25 members of the Elgin, Illinois astronomy club who sailed on board the Cunard Line's luxury cruise ship, the Canberra to view one of the longest solar eclipses of modern time, June 30, 1973. The cruise included more than 2500 interested passengers, scientists, and professors to view the eclipse and to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Nicholas Copernicus. Most were there to learn and dozens of distinguished lecturers in many fields were along to satisfy that thirst for knowledge. The two lecturers in the category of "Modern Exploration" were Neil Armstrong and Scott Carpenter. Who better than the second American to orbit the earth and the first man to walk on the moon? It is very likely that Armstrong was given this patch by the enthusiastic "Shadow Chasers" of Elgin. Excellent. Sealed in a numbered archival slab, CAG 1001714-007. This lot will include a Statement of Provenance signed by Neil Armstrong's sons, Rick and Mark.
