Official world record claims for Luna 2, the first manmade object to land on another celestial body

Soviet Original Bound Book: "File on Engineering and Scientific Achievements and Records Made by the Second Soviet Space Rocket Carrying the Luna-2 Automatic Interplanetary Station" from the Library of Soviet Engineer Oleg Ivanovsky. "September 12-13, 1959". Published at Moscow in 1972. This 9" x 12" book is lavishly bound in maroon with gilt titles and is printed in English. Inside are nine separate signed statements and reports backing up the two world record claims to the International Aero Federation (FAI): (1) Maximum mass injected into the lunar trajectory (class of "C"); and (2) Maximum mass delivered to the Moon surface (class of "C"). These claims are backed up across ten detailed statements and technical reports, each signed by one or more individuals intimately related to the Luna-2 design and launch: Ivan G. Borisenko, Sports Commissar of USSR Aero Sports Foundation; Y. S. Makarov, Chief of Control Laboratory; Vladimir V. Vorshev, Chief of Telemetering Measurement Laboratory; A. A. Shustov, Chief of Radio Laboratory; and Engineers E. F. Ryanasov, I. P. Firsov, and V. K. Algunov. After these signed statements are five original B&W glossy photos, each laid down to a separate page. An important and highly-detailed official Soviet document regarding a landmark early spaceflight. Excellent.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
