    Description

This medal spent fifty-nine days in space and was later worn at lunch with the President

Skylab II (SL-3) Flown 14K Gold Robbins Medallion Set in a Custom Gold Bezel Pendant Originally Gifted by Mission Commander Alan Bean to His Wife Sue, with His and Her Handwritten Letters of Certification. A rare opportunity to own one of the incredibly rare and collectible 14K gold Skylab medals. This 35mm medal is one of only six made in gold flown aboard Skylab II, July 28-September 25, 1973, with crewmembers Alan Bean, Jack Lousma, and Owen Garriott. The obverse features the mission insignia depicting Leonardo da Vinci's famous "Vitruvian Man" hovering above a half-Earth/ half-Sun disk with the surnames of the crewmembers above and "Skylab II" below. The reverse depicts the Skylab station with the mission dates engraved. Gold Robbins medals are seldom offered at auction; don't miss this one. Excellent.

Included with this lot is a handwritten and signed letter from Alan Bean stating, in full: "I hereby certify that the Skylab II (SL-3) 14kt gold Robbins Medal presented to you by Sue Bean Gilliam was flown with me aboard Skylab July 28 - September 25, 1973. Owen Garriott, Jack Lousma and I spent 59 incredible days aboard Skylab orbiting 270 times around earth. I gave this medal to my wife Sue upon my return. She had a gold bezel made in order to wear it as a necklace to some of the post mission functions we attended, including lunch with President and Mrs. Nixon at the White House. Its life and presentation are now in your hands."

Also included is a handwritten and signed letter from Sue Bean attesting to mostly the same facts.
