Project Mercury: Complex 14 Gantry Astronaut Handrail Segment on Plaque Originally from the Personal Collection of Deke Slayton. A 1.5" diameter x 3.75" tall segment of metal tubing mounted to a 4" x 4" x 0.75" wooden base with an engraved plate that reads: "This is a piece of the Astronaut Handrail from the Gantry at Complex 14 used in the manned Mercury Program. February 20, 1962 - May 15, 1963". Glenn, Carpenter, Schirra, and Cooper all held onto this rail as they ascended to their space capsules. A section of the handrail was saved when the gantry structures were dismantled in the 1970s after years of disuse. In 1977, Deke Slayton requested twelve mementos from the LC-14 gantry to give to the Mercury astronauts at a reunion. Photocopies of the routing slip to Slayton for twelve such mementos and also the thank you letter from Slayton for them. From the estate of Slayton. Fine with light scratches.
