Gemini 4 stamps signed by fourteen Gemini astronauts plus Alan Shepard

Project Gemini: Pane of Fifty Stamps Signed by Fifteen Astronauts including Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Michael Collins, Alan Shepard, John Young, James Lovell, and Gene Cernan, Directly from the Collection of Robert T. Sakowitz. This 50-stamp pane of the se-tenant Gemini EVA stamps bears the signatures of all the Gemini-flown astronauts except Gus Grissom and Ed White II, who both perished in the tragic January 1967 launchpad fire. The inscriptions are in various inks and in various positions, as follows:

    Capt. Alan Shepard/ Freedom 7 5-5-61; Frank Borman/ GT 7/ 4-18-Dec 65; John Young/ GT-3 23 Mar 65/ GT-10 18 July 66; Buzz Aldrin/ Gemini XII/ 11-15 Nov 66; Neil Armstrong/ Gemini VIII/ 3-16-66; Gordon Cooper/ MA 9 15 May 66/ GT5 21-29 Aug 65; Tom Stafford/ GT-6 15-16 Dec 65; Wally Schirra/ Sigma 7 10-3-62/ Gemini VI 12-15-65; Dave Scott/ Gemini VIII/ March 16 1966; James Lovell/ Gemini 7 - 12/ 4-18 Dec 1965; James A. McDivitt/ Gemini IV/ 3-7 June 65; Michael Collins/ Gemini X 18-21 July 66; Dick Gordon/ GT-11 Sept 12-15 66; Gene Cernan/ Gemini IX/ 3-6 June 66; and Charles Conrad/ Gemini V & XI/ Aug 22-29 '65 / Sept 12-15 66".

An amazing group of signatures made so much more desirable by the detailed mission information added to each signature. Overall 8" x 10.25". Signed for Mrs. Ann Sakowitz by these fifteen admirers. Contrast is only fair due to the dark color of the stamps. Also included with this lot are two mint sheets of these stamps, unsigned. Very fine.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
