DescriptionMercury Seven: Original Group Photo and NASA's "Results of the First United States Manned Orbital Space Flight February 20, 1962" Book, Both Signed by All, Together in a Framed Display. First, a 9.75" x 7.25" B&W matte finish photo picturing the first seven astronauts chosen by NASA for their Man in Space project. This photo, showing the astronauts inspecting a Mercury Atlas model, was one of a series of photos taken at Langley Research Center. All seven of these brave men, who laid the groundwork for America's space program, have neatly signed in various inks along the wide lower border with the earliest forms of their signatures: "Alan B Shepard Jr", "Walter M. Schirra Jr", "John H. Glenn, Jr.", "Virgil I. Grissom", "M. Scott Carpenter", "Donald K. Slayton", and "Leroy G. Cooper, Jr". These photos are always in demand from collectors but rarely are we able to offer one of this quality; the signatures are dark and clear and the photo exhibits no fading or silvering. One would be hard-pressed to find a nicer example.
This photo is beautifully matted with the above-mentioned NASA book giving the full details of John Glenn's historic MA-6 Friendship 7 flight that has also been signed by all seven of these heroes with the "Right Stuff": "Alan B Shepard Jr", "Virgil I Grissom", "J H Glenn Jr", "Scott Carpenter", "Walter M. Schirra Jr", "Gordon Cooper", and "D K Slayton". Either of these items would be considered a great addition to a Space collection. Together in a ready to hang framed display of 23" x 14.5: x 1.25" deep, it would be considered the centerpiece of any Mercury collection. Very fine.
