    Description

Apollo 16 Flown Texas State Flag Directly from the John W. Young Collection, with Letter of Certification. A 6" x 4.25" cloth flag of the Lone Star State that flew to the moon on the next-to-last Apollo mission with crewmembers John Young, Ken Mattingly, and Charlie Duke, April 16-27, 1972. Not common. NASA's Johnson Space Center, located in the Houston area, is where Captain Young worked until his retirement on December 31, 2004, after six space flights and forty-two years of distinguished service. Excellent.

Included with this lot is a Letter of Certification signed by Young's widow, Susy Young. It reads, in full: "I hereby certify that the flag of the STATE of TEXAS that accompanies this letter was flown to the Moon aboard the Apollo 16 mission April 16-27, 1972. It has been a part of John W. Young's personal collection since returning from the mission. The flag has a holographic tamper-proof label, #1733181, to ensure authenticity, that will display a residual honeycomb design without number if removed."
