    Description

Neil Armstrong Handwritten Letter Draft to Buzz Aldrin Regarding Return to Earth Movie Plans, circa December 1973, Directly from The Armstrong Family Collection™, CAG Certified. One page, 8" x 10.5" notebook paper, written in red pencil. In the first Armstrong Family Collection auction, November 1-2, 2018, we sold a typewritten letter from Buzz Aldrin to Neil Armstrong (Auction #6205, Lot 52759) where he sent him a copy of Return to Earth and asked for Armstrong's consent for this book to be made into a movie. This is Armstrong's reply of a couple months later. He is obviously struggling to verbalize his thoughts into this letter as there are several edits. It reads, in full:

    "D. B.

"I have delayed much too long in answering your note, primarily because I was unable to find a suitable reply.

"In all honesty, I believe that a movie of "Return to Earth" would not be good for you. I can't think of a biography of a living person that has ever been made into a good flick. That makes pretty long odds.

"I know that if you decide to go ahead, you can do so with or without my concurrence. I do hope you will think it over carefully before you decide.

"All is well her on the farm. We have ice on the pond and suspect the Armstrong hockey league will begin earnest this week.

"Janet joins me in sending all the Aldrins our very best wishes for the Holiday season."

A very interesting and revealing letter. For whatever reason, the movie was not made at that time but there was a TV movie made from the book in 1976 with Cliff Robertson as Aldrin. Letter quite toned with low contrast but certainly legible. Very good. Sealed in a numbered archival sleeve, CAG 1000100-007. This lot will include a Statement of Provenance signed by Neil Armstrong's sons, Rick and Mark.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
