"...I'm hoping to escape till the 25th or later."

Neil Armstrong 1983 Typed Letter Signed to His Father Regarding Wapakoneta's Plan for an Apollo 11 Fifteenth Anniversary Celebration, Directly from His Brother's Collection. One page on 8.5" x 11" personal letterhead, September 12, 1983, to this father Stephen K. Armstrong. It reads, in full:

    "Dear Dad:

"Wapakoneta has already had 2 'Neil Armstrong Days', which is, in my opinion, at least one too many.

"I don't know where Mr. Shaull got the idea that I 'wouldn't mind a public appearance every fifth anniversary'. Actually, I'm hoping to escape till the 25th or later.

"In my opinion, commemorative celebrations of any government action or event should be conducted by (or at least coordinated with) the government. Apollo 11 would certainly fit in that category.

"I'll be happy to convey my thoughts directly to Mr. Shaull if you think it appropriate.

"All the best. Sincerely, [signed] Neil"

Apparently LaVerne Shaull, the publisher of the local Wapakoneta Daily News, had approached Stephen Armstrong regarding Neil's appearance at a fifth anniversary celebration in 1984. Neil definitely had different thoughts about that and he expressed them to his father. A great insight to his reluctance for this type of public event. Flattened mailing folds, very fine. A Certificate of Authenticity from Neil's brother Dean Armstrong will accompany this lot.
