    Description

Neil Armstrong 1979 Typed Letter Signed Regarding His Late-1978 Farm Accident, Directly From The Armstrong Family Collection™, CAG Certified. One page, 8.5" x 11" University of Cincinnati letterhead, no date, to "Dear Friend." In November 1978, Armstrong suffered a freak accident on his Lebanon, Ohio, farm that severed his fingertip. He was flown to Louisville's Jewish Hospital where their renowned microsurgery unit performed a successful replant. Well wishes poured in from all over the world and this original letter was created to be reproduced and sent to all these correspondents. An interesting memento of a little known incident in his post-NASA life. The letter reads in full:

"Thank you for your kind letter after my recent injury. I do wish I could respond to each of you individually, but the volume of cards and letters makes that choice impossible. I hope you'll accept this response to all of you collectively as a suitable substitute.

"First, I was amazed at the number of you who have experienced similar injuries. I never realized just how common the loss of a finger is. In fact, most of the injuries you wrote about were substantially more serious than mine. Your experiences and your therapy recommendations have been most helpful to me.

"The replant was performed by Hand Surgery Associates of Louisville, Kentucky. The bone connection was just above the first joint of the left ring finger. The second joint was fused. Two arteries and five veins were joined by microsurgical techniques. Therapy has provided consistant improvement and I now enjoy considerable finger mobility and hope to be able to play golf by this summer.

"Again, I can't thank you enough for your cards, letters, and thoughtful good wishes.

"I send my very good wishes. Sincerely, [signed] Neil Armstrong"

Excellent. Sealed in a numbered archival sleeve, CAG 1000145-002. This lot will include a Statement of Provenance signed by Neil Armstrong's sons, Rick and Mark.
