    TEST PILOT & X-15

NASA: Neil Armstrong's Flight Research Center Test Pilot's Kneeboard Circa 1960, Directly From The Armstrong Family Collection™, Certified by Collectors Authentication Guaranty With Photo Certificate. 5" x 10", gray molded plastic, marked "National Aeronautics and Space Administration / Flight Research Center / Edwards, California" on the face of the lower retaining clip. The kneepad features two spring-loaded catches at each end to secure 3 blank sheets of 5" x 8.5" note paper, a plastic pencil sharpener is mounted on the upper right side, and molded-compartments to house pencils on each side. One of the pencils is a Best /Rite 411-No. 2; the other a well-chewed Herald Square 3801-HS No. 2 with worn flat eraser. The kneeboard has a 1.5" wide black cotton web strap with metal slider buckle for adjustment and a "Lift the Dot" snap for securing it to the pilot's upper thigh. Two thin black rubber pads are mounted in the concave lower side to provide some comfort. Neil arrived at the Flight Research Center in the Spring of 1956. He served as a project pilot on a dozen or more aircraft including the North American F-100 Super Sabre, McDonnell F-101 Voodoo, and the Republic F-105 Thunderchief. This kneeboard would almost certainly date from the 1959 to 1962 era. It would likely not have been used by Neil during his X-15 flights but utilized for the more conventional aircraft he was involved with during the period. The kneeboard shows honest wear from use but remains in excellent overall condition. This lot will include an encapsulated CAG Photo Certificate with a Statement of Provenance signed by Neil Armstrong's sons, Rick and Mark.
