    Description

NASA Group Eight Astronauts: Color NASA Photo Signed by All Thirty-Five in Framed Display. An 8" x 10" NASA litho print bearing small portraits of all members of this class, titled "Astronaut Candidates Selected January, 1978". It has been signed by every member on or below their respective image. This was the first new group picked by NASA since 1969. Since there was such a long period between Apollo/ Skylab and the Space Shuttle program, many of the earlier astronauts had resigned or retired. This class, humorously known as "TFNG" (Thirty-Five New Guys) was intended to build the corps back up to full strength; they were divided into two groups as seen in the list that follows (shows number of flights for each). Pilots: Daniel Brandenstein (4), Michael Coats (3), Richard Covey (4), John Creighton (3), Robert Gibson (5), Frederick D. Gregory (3), Frederick Hauck (3), Jon McBride (1), Francis "Dick" Scobee (2), Brewster Shaw (3), Loren Shriver (3), David Walker (4), and Donald Williams (2). Mission Specialists: Guion Bluford (4), James Buchli (4), John Fabian (2), Anna Fisher (1), Dale Gardner (2), S. David Griggs (1), Terry Hart (1), Steven Hawley (5), Jeffrey Hoffman (5), Shannon Lucid (5), Ronald McNair (2), Richard Mullane (3), Steven Nagel (4), George Nelson (3), Ellison Onizuka (2), Judith Resnik (2), Sally Ride (2), Rhea Seddon (3), Robert Stewart (2), Kathryn D. Sullivan (3), Norman Thagard (5), and James van Hoften (2). This was quite an active group as every member flew at least once. There were numerous American space "firsts" among them: first woman (Sally Ride); first African-American (Guion Bluford); first Jewish-American (Judy Resnik); first Asian-American (Ellison Onizuka); first woman EVA (Kathryn Sullivan); and first Army astronaut (Robert Stewart). Tragically, four members of this class would perish in the STS-51-L Challenger accident (Scobee, Resnik, Onizuka, and McNair). An amazing assemblage of signatures, matted and framed to an overall 13.25" x 15.25" and ready for your wall. Excellent.

Also included in this lot is a NASA STS-41-D crew color litho print signed authentically by "Judy Resnik", "Mike Mullane", "Steve Hawley", "Hank Hartsfield", and "Mike Coats" with an autopen signature of Charles Walker. Framed to an overall 11.25" x 8.75". Excellent.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
