    Description

Miami University: Armstrong June 1970 Correspondence Copies with Photo Album Directly From The Armstrong Family Collection™, Certified and Encapsulated by Collectibles Authentication Guaranty. Two letter copies, both 8" x 10.5", of the correspondence between Phillip R. Shriver, President of Miami University, and Neil Armstrong. On July 29, 1969, Shriver wrote to Armstrong to invite him to attend the Commencement ceremony at Miami University as well as to receive an honorary degree of Doctor of Science. He went on to add, "Because of the close ties which have existed for many decades between your home town of Wapakoneta and Miami University, and because we are all so very proud of you as an Ohioan, an American, and a gentleman, we should like to have this opportunity to express our appreciation to you. I very much hope that you can be with us next June 14."

On September 15, 1969, Cyril E. Baker responded on behalf of Armstrong, stating that the astronaut would be honored to attend the ceremony "barring operational commitments which could possibly preclude his attendance..." It should be noted that the original of this letter was signed by Cyril E. Baker, while this copy has been concluded by Thomas P. Stafford, Chief of the Astronaut Office. Accompanying these two letters is a large photo album, 11.25" x 12.25", which contains fourteen black and white images of Armstrong at the ceremony as well as program sheets from the event on June 14, 1970. Minor toning and slight creating at edges of both letters. Each has two small holes from where a staple was removed, with very small amounts of soiling. Photographs are fine. This lot will include a Statement of Provenance signed by Neil Armstrong's sons, Rick and Mark.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
