    Description

Includes his 1964 "Official Guest" laminated badge

Mercury Seven Monument 14K Gold Medal #17 by Medallic Arts (Ralph J. Menconi, Sc) in Acrylic Display, Presented in 1964 to and Directly from the Estate of NASA Legend Chris Kraft, on Wooden Base, with Certificate of Authenticity. A stunning 1.75" (44mm) diameter medal with images of astronauts Carpenter, Cooper, Glenn, Grissom, Schirra, Shepard, and Slayton above "PROJECT MERCURY" on the obverse. This matches the round plaque at the monument. On the reverse is an image of the monument's design, an Atlas rocket, and the text "COMMEMORATING FREE MAN'S FIRST ADVENTURE BEYOND THE ATMOSPHERE 1958-1963". These medals were struck in gold, silver, and bronze, released at the time of the monument's dedication (November 10, 1964) and presented to "congressional, government and industry leaders who performed extraordinary roles in the success of the initial U.S. man-in-space program." Note that the distinction of "Free Man" is made as the Soviet Union actually launched a man into space before the United States. Hallmarked "17", "14K", and "Medallic Arts" along the rim. Encased in a 2.875" square x 1.125" acrylic block which is mounted atop a 3.5" x 2.5" x 2.5" wooden base. This is the first of the gold version we have ever encountered. High gold content. Mint state. Exceedingly rare and desirable. This item was kept by Kraft in the west bookshelf of his office at home.

Included with this lot is the 2.5" x 4" laminated yellow badge with clip that he wore to the solemn occasion of the "Mercury Monument Dedication" on "10 November 64" as an "Official Guest." On it are the NASA and United States Air Force logos. Reverse is blank.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
