    Description

Presented Personally to Chris Kraft by Gus Grissom

Mercury-Redstone 4 (Liberty Bell 7) Flown U.S. 10¢ Coin Directly from the Estate of NASA Legend Chris Kraft, in Acrylic Display, with Certificate of Authenticity. A 1961-D Roosevelt silver dime, one of a group that Gus Grissom carried in his spacesuit during the Mercury 4 mission. Next to it in the 4.125" x 2.375" x 1.125" display is a sterling silver disk with "Liberty Bell 7" engraved on one side and "21 July 1961" on the other. These were given to friends and NASA insiders as mementoes of the flight. Grissom also carried some older "Mercury" dimes with him that sank with the spacecraft; they were found in 1999 when the capsule was recovered from the ocean. This should appeal to both Space and Coin collectors. Coin excellent though a bit toned; the display exhibits mild yellow toning and light scratching, fine. Included with this lot is a 10" x 8" silk finish B&W reprint photo of Kraft at his Mercury console. This item was kept by Kraft in the west bookshelf of his office at home.

Dr. Kraft recalls how he obtained this coin from Grissom: "Nothing inspires introspection more than failure. Nor is anything more clear than twenty-twenty hindsight. I thought about the day a month or so ago when we were running a training simulation and Gus called me into one of the support rooms off our mission control center. He handed me a one dime encased in Lucite. 'It's from Liberty Bell 7,' he said. 'I've been saving it for you.' With the small gift, Gus was saying that we were friends and partners. He trusted me to run his mission. And along the way, we'd put Gus and his crew into a pure oxygen environment that surely was a major cause of their deaths. I have that dime where I see it every time I sit at my desk. It's a reminder that we hadn't thought of everything in time to save the guy who carried it into space on Project Mercury." ( Flight. My Life in Mission Control by Chris Kraft, page 273, New York: Dutton, 2001)
