    Description

Flown on the first U.S. manned orbital space flight

Mercury-Atlas 6 (Friendship 7) Flown One Dollar Bill, Signed by John Glenn, with Signed Certificate of Authenticity. A Series 1957 $1 Silver Certificate, serial number A31941854B, which flew with John Glenn on his three-orbit mission, February 20, 1962. It is signed "J H Glenn, Jr" and "Terry Thompson" (likely a launch crew member) to the left of Washington's portrait. There were apparently fifty-two pieces of U.S. currency ($1 and $2) that flew with Glenn on this historic flight. A list of the serial numbers is included with the lot. Generally excellent save for two staples at lower edge attaching it to a decorative printed certificate with the following text: "The following U.S. currency Serial No. A31951854B accompanied Lt. Col. John H. Glenn on the first manned orbital flight aboard Friendship 7 Feb. 20, 1962. [Signed] J H Glenn Jr. [Signed] M Scott Carpenter".

Also included are separate full Letters of Authenticity from JSA (Certification Number: X73735) and PSA/DNA (Certification: S09730) attesting to the authenticity of the signatures.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
