Kitty Hawk: Piece of Original Wright Flyer Fabric On a Presentation Certificate to Edwin E. Aldrin Sr., with Original Provenance and Frame. A 1.25" x 1.625" swatch of cloth glued to a 7.25" x 9.25" (sight size) certificate bearing a photo of the Wright Flyer and the following text: "Original Fabric From Kitty Hawk 'Wright Flyer' Certification for E. E. Aldrin. When Orville Wright, at my suggestion, assembled the Kitty Hawk machine for the first time, in 1916, at the opening of the new buildings of M.I.T. in Cambridge, he found that the original fabric could not be used and substituted new fabric of the identical material. When he died, his executors found that he had preserved some of the original coverings of the wings and entrusted several pieces of this most valuable relic to me for distribution to notable aeronautical friends. I certify that this piece was used in the first successful flight in history by Orville Wright on December 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk, N.C. [signed] Lester D. Gardner". Frame measures 8.75" x 10.75" overall. Included is a card and fact sheet from Gardner measuring 6" x 13" overall. It states at the top "Please paste on back of frame" It has the name "Edwin E. Aldrin" typed in and reads, in part: "I send you with certification what I regard as the most valuable relic in aeronautical history. As very few of these relics can be presented and as they would always be a rare collector's item, I hope that you will have the gift framed..." It goes on to give the history of the first manned powered flight. Seldom seen with full original provenance. Fine.

One could speculate that young Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. might have seen this piece of the Wright Flyer on his father's wall and have his desire to fly someday stimulated. An amazing relic associating the flight of the first airplane to the first crew to land on the moon.
