One of only three known signed examplesGus Grissom Signed Mercury-Redstone 4 (Liberty Bell) U.S.S. Randolph Splashdown Cover also Signed by the Ship's Executive Officer, with Photo of Rescue Signed by Helicopter Pilot. An Airmail envelope with a 7¢ stamp cancelled July 21, 1961, aboard the U.S.S. Randolph. It bears a stamped cachet with the following text: "U.S.S. Randolph Helicopter Rescues Grissom From Sea. At Cape Canaveral. Capt. Virgil I. Grissom, USAF. 2nd U.S. Space Flight in 'Liberty Bell' Space Capsule". It is signed vertically at center: "Virgil I Grissom" and at upper left: "Capt. R. C. Knight, USN/ Executive Officer/ USS Randolph". This is the ultimate "must have" cover for those collecting signed splashdown philatelia. A similar signed cover recently sold at public auction for $16,451.18. Addressed, very fine.
Also included is a 10" x 8" photo of the above-mentioned helicopter during the rescue. It is signed by the Marine pilot: "With wheels dripping and an engine warning light burning we try raising Liberty Bell 7 on 21 July 1961." A perfect companion piece. Excellent.
