    Description

Guenter Wendt Signed Photo, Pictured with "Ham." A 10" x 8" silk finish B&W photo on Kodak Endura paper of Wendt in a McDonnell lab coat with "Ham" in his arms. Signed boldly in black felt tip: "'Ham'/ America's first/ Chimp in Space/ Guenter F. Wendt/ Padleader". Wendt served as padleader from the flight of Ham the chimpanzee on Mercury-Redstone 2 in 1961 through to the early Shuttle missions before his retirement in 1989. He was the last earthbound face seen before liftoff by many of the astronauts during that period and they all shared a strong admiration and respect for him. Excellent.
