    Description

Gemini 8 Flown Heat Shield Plug in Capsule-Shaped Display, a Gift from Neil Armstrong to His Parents, with Viola's Note on Bottom, Directly from His Brother's Collection. A segment, approximately 0.75" x 1.75", sealed in a plastic representation of the spacecraft itself, overall 2.875" diameter x 4.75" long. This is mounted to a triangular-shaped base, 4" x 5.25" overall, underneath which is engraved: "Heat Shield of/ Gemini VIII/ 1st Docking In/ Space N. Armstrong/ D. Scott/ March 16, 1966". This mission did indeed perform the first ever orbital docking, to an Agena Target Vehicle. Unfortunately, while docked, a thruster stuck causing the spacecraft to roll. Even after undocking, it continued to tumble forcing an early end to the mission and a very uncomfortable situation for the astronauts. Armstrong's quick action averted a major disaster. This was the piece that Armstrong gifted to his parents. On the bottom is taped a note from his mother: "Gift from Neil to Dad & Mother 1966". Light wear, otherwise excellent. A Certificate of Authenticity from Neil's brother Dean Armstrong will accompany this lot.
