    Description

Gemini 5 Flown MS64 NGC Gilt over Sterling Silver Fliteline Medallion Directly From The Armstrong Family Collection™, CAG Certified. This 25mm medal was flown aboard Gemini 5, which doubled the space-flight record of the previous Gemini 4 mission to eight days, the length of time that it would take to fly a mission to the moon (planning for the future). Onboard Gemini 5 were Gordon Cooper and Charles Conrad, Jr. Neil Armstrong was the backup to Cooper for this mission. The obverse of the medal shows a covered wagon due to the pioneering nature of the flight with the slogan"8 Days or Bust" across the wagon. NASA managers were not very happy with this; they feared that it placed too much emphasis on just the length of the flight, not what was accomplished. The reverse has the dates engraved and the sterling hallmark. As a member of the astronaut office, Armstrong was allowed to purchase this medal. A Choice Uncirculated example of a lovely medal, CAG 1000044-006. This lot will include a Statement of Provenance signed by Neil Armstrong's sons, Rick and Mark.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
