    Description

Gemini 5 Flown Gilt over Silver Fliteline Medallion Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Pilot Charles Conrad, with His Handwritten and Signed Letter of Authenticity. This 25mm gold-colored sterling silver medal was flown aboard Gemini 5, which doubled the space-flight record of the Gemini 4 mission to eight days, the length of time that it would take to fly a mission to the moon. Onboard Gemini 5 were Gordon Cooper and Charles Conrad, Jr. The obverse of the medal shows a covered wagon. It was also has "8 Days or Bust" across the wagon. The reverse has the dates of the flight engraved. A very nice example with original case included.

Included with this lot is a rarely-offered handwritten and signed COA from Conrad on his notecard reading, in full: "This gold plated sterling silver medallion flew aboard the Gemini V spacecraft during August 21-29, 1965. The eight day mission achieved the longest manned space mission to date. It is from my personal collection. Charles Conrad Jr. Gemini V PLT."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
