Capitol-flown flag presented to the first American to walk in space.

Gemini 4: American Flag Flown over the Capitol during the Mission Presented by the Speaker of the House to Ed White II in 1965 and Directly from His Personal Collection. A large 8' x 12' American flag, 100% cotton, Bull Dog Bunting by Dettras Flag Products that flew over the U.S. Capitol for the four days that James McDivitt and Ed White II were orbiting the earth in Gemini 4. A dramatic item for display. Excellent condition.

Included with this lot are two original pieces of provenance: (1) A typed letter signed "J George Stewart" on "Architect of the Capitol" letterhead, dated June 17, 1965, to the Honorable John W. McCormack, Speaker of the House of Representatives, certifying: "...that the accompanying flag was flying over the West Front of the United States Capitol during the Gemini 4 flight... from 11:16 A.M., June 3, 1965, when the flight was launched from Cape Kennedy, until 1:13 P.M., June 7, 1965, splash-down time."; and (2) A 10" x 8" AP B&W press photo dated June 17, 1965, picturing Speaker McCormick presenting a matching flag to James McDivitt while White looks on. The caption mentions that White also received a flag. Both the astronauts' wives are shown in the photo.

Included with this lot is a signed certificate of authenticity from Ed White III.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
