    Description

Gemini 3 Flown Silver Fliteline Medallion Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander Gus Grissom, with a Signed COA from Betty Grissom. This 26mm sterling silver medal flew on America's first two-man space mission on March 23, 1965, along with Gus Grissom and John Young. The obverse features the mission insignia of a space capsule floating in the water with "The Molly Brown" and the crew's full names above and below. The reverse has a struck "GT-3" and an engraved mission date along with the sterling hallmark. Grissom named the flight after the Broadway play, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, a lighthearted reference to his first spacecraft Liberty Bell 7, which sank after splashdown. A great example with original case included.

Included with this lot is a signed letter from Grissom's widow Betty Grissom reading, in full: "The Virgil I. 'Gus' Grissom Collection. The enclosed medallion is one of the originals made at the request of my husband for his Gemini 3 flight. Gus had lost his Mercury capsule after a short circuit blew the hatch. Molly Brown, the 'unsinkable' heroine from the Broadway musical, seemed the best choice by my husband for the name of his Gemini spacecraft. NASA never officially named Gemini 3 Molly Brown, but the name was enthusiastically used by the press during mission coverage. This medallion was flown on the flight of Gemini 3 and made three orbits during March 23, 1965. Gemini 3 was the first manned flight of the Gemini Program."
