Dr. Robert H. Goddard Memorial Trophy Presented in 1979 to Dr. Christopher Columbus Kraft Jr., Directly from the NASA Legend's Estate, with Certificate of Authenticity. A striking bust of the likeness of Dr. Goddard "the father of modern rocketry". The award has been given out annually since 1958 to "an individual or group determined to have made the most impact on space activities over the past year". This is the primary award bestowed by the National Space Club. Goddard is credited with building the first ever liquid-fueled rocket, and successfully launching it on March 16, 1926. The priceless research and innovation of Dr. Goddard undoubtedly led to numerous advances in man's ability to fly. This award is often given to individuals as well as groups. For instance, the entire crew of Apollo 11 received the award in 1970, one year after is was bestowed to the Apollo 8 crew. The bust is placed upon a black marble base and measures an overall 13.5" x 6.5" x 6.5". Metal plaques are adhered to all four sides, with the front reading: "Presented to/ Dr. Christopher C. Kraft Jr./ March 30, 1978". This was kept on a table in the upstairs den of the Kraft home. Some light scratching consistent with age, otherwise very fine.
