"To ensure a valuable space asset is a viable warfighting entity"

Bruce McCandless II: Important 1987 Letter Regarding Potential Uses of the Space Shuttles "During Conflict" Directly from His Personal Collection. Two pages, November 30, 1987, Commander Naval Space Command letterhead, from Rear Admiral R. C. Macke to Bruce at NASA. It reads, in full:

"In order to get us moving on defining a role For STS during conflict, here are a few concepts for you and the 'gang' to chew on. I'm sure you have some to add, especially after your time at Global War Games. The other Navy and Marine astronauts can certainly add to this list also:

    "Visual Observations
    Troop/tank concentrations
On-board electro-optical system to aid observations
SIR-C on-board processing for observations in restricted visability
On-board defensive systems and attack warning
    Counter-attack weapons
Define range of altitudes and inclinations possible from Kennedy matrixed against payload weights Communications (encrypted and plain) available to communicate with:
    Theater HO's
    Ground forces

"I'm sure that the brain trust present there in Houston will add significantly to the above and flesh out what is listed. The important thing to me into contingency plans, start developing or modifying equipment and whatever else is needed to ensure a valuable space asset is a viable warfighting entity. Thanks for your continued help to naval space."

To this writer, it is somehow shocking (but not really surprising) that plans were being made for how the Space Shuttle vehicles were to be used in times of war. An important piece of naval space history for the discerning collector. Envelope of transmittal included. Flattened horizontal fold, light stain on first page, fine.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
