Apollo Lunar Module Reaction Control System Marquardt R-4D Rocket Engine with Extended Nozzle, Manufactured in Early 1971. A rare offering of an original rocket engine as was made for NASA; sixteen of this type of engine were mounted on the exterior of each Lunar Module in four quadruple clusters and sixteen as well on each Service Module. This piece of history has three separate ID plates, one each for the "Valve Assy-Solenoid, Fuel" and "Valve Assy-Solenoid, Oxidizer" assemblies, and one for the entire assembled part which bears the following information:

    "ENGINE-ROCKET Part No. 228687-533 Ser. No. 1423"
    "Contract No. R0266A560531 Date 1Q71"
    "Marquardt Corporation Van Nuys, California"

There are several other numbers printed on the part as well. Included is a pliant red rubber cap for the end of the nozzle extension. Strapped inside are two Protek-Sorb packets. It bears the following information:

    "RX 20633-203

    Desiccant 2 Places

    "RX-20790-41 Assy.
    02602 Mfg. 75345
    Cure Date-2Q71"

The Marquardt Corporation was awarded the contract to build the reaction-control rocket engines for the Apollo spacecraft in 1963. They were first flown in the unmanned Apollo-Saturn 201 test flight launched in February 1966. Designed for maneuvering in space, this was a bipropellant engine using hypergolic nitrogen tetroxide and hydrazine as propellants, generating 100+ pounds of thrust. Overall, 13" long. Only the second we've offered with the original nozzle extension and the first with the nozzle cover. Incredibly rare and desirable, worthy of the finest collections. Excellent.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
