    Description

Apollo Astronauts: A Singular Collection of Individually Signed Apollo Commemorative Matchbooks Displayed in a Frame by Mission- Thirty-Three Signed Matchbooks by Twenty-Nine Astronauts. Soon after the Apollo 17 mission, RCA issued numbered sets of twelve front strike, 30-stick size matchbooks- one for each mission with the insignia on the back and a crew photo on the front. The twelfth book had the Apollo insignia on the back and portraits of Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon on the front. The cover sheet matted with these is numbered "00006". This display features four matchbooks for each mission, three signed on the back and one of the front. Two are signed twice for a total of thirty-five signatures. As follows.

Apollo 7: "Donn Eisele", "Wally Schirra", and "Walt Cunningham".
Apollo 8: "James Lovell", "Anders", and "Frank Borman".
Apollo 9: "To Nick/ James McDivitt", "Dave Scott", and "Rusty Schweickart".
Apollo 10: "Gene Cernan", "John Young", and "Tom Stafford".
Apollo 11: "Neil Armstrong", "M Collins", and "Buzz Aldrin".
Apollo 12: "Charles Conrad Jr", "Dick Gordon", "Charles Conrad Jr/ Alan Bean".
Apollo 13: "James Lovell", "Jack Swigert", and "Fred Haise".
Apollo 14: "Stuart Roosa", "Alan Shepard" (signature quite faded), and "Ed Mitchell" (also faded).
Apollo 15: "Jim Irwin", "Dave Scott", and "Al Worden".
Apollo 16: "John Young", "Ken Mattingly", and "Charlie Duke".
Apollo 17: "H. H. Schmitt", "Gene Cernan", and "Ron Evans" (signed twice).

The frame is 27.5" x 25.5" and there is a note handwritten on the verso to the effect that the matches are not glued down but rather are hung on tabs for removal without damage. If you are looking for something unique and different to hang on your wall, this certainly fits the bill. Very fine.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
