    Description

Apollo 9 Flown Heat Shield Segment in Acrylic Display Directly from the Estate of NASA Legend Chris Kraft, with Certificate of Authenticity. A 1" diameter x 1.5" long section, charred at the top, sealed in a Lucite cylinder, 3" diameter x 2" tall with "APOLLO 9/ MARCH 3-13, 1969 " engraved on the bottom. Apollo 9 was an important mission, performing: the first manned flight of a lunar module, the first docking/extraction of a lunar module, a two-man spacewalk, and the first docking of two manned spacecraft. They also tested various equipment and maneuvers that were critical to the success of the upcoming moon missions. A rare relic, only the second Heritage has offered and the first since 2008. Very fine. Included with this lot is an 8" x 10" silk finish B&W reprint photo of Kraft with Jim McDivitt. After the return to earth and the processing of the space capsule, Kraft was awarded this souvenir. He kept it in the west bookcase of the upstairs den.

NASA had changed its thinking and allowed the astronauts to name their spacecraft. "For Apollo 9, the call signs were Gumdrop for the CSM and Spider for the lunar module. I chuckled when I heard the choice. We needed a bit of levity balanced against our serious natures." ( Flight. My Life in Mission Control by Chris Kraft, page 303, New York: Dutton, 2001)

This crew of Jim McDivitt, Dave Scott, and Rusty Schweickart performed multiple difficult tasks successfully. After a tricky docking of Spider with Gumdrop, Craft realized that "[t]he last piece of our complex moon plan had just been proven. I went home that night knowing that we could actually do this thing... The machines all worked. So did the humans, in mission control and among the astronaut corps. We'd put together one helluva team. It was time to go back to the moon." ( Flight, page 306).
