    Description

Apollo 9 Flown Embroidered Mission Insignia Patch Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Rusty Schweickart, Signed and Certified. This 3.25" diameter patch depicts a Saturn V rocket orbited by a lunar module and a command/service module trailing fire against a blue background. The crew surnames are around at top and the mission name at bottom, inside a red border. The "D" in McDivitt is filled in red to signify that this was the fourth in the alphabetic sequence of pre-moon landing missions. Apollo 9, March 3-13, 1969, was the first space test of the complete Apollo spacecraft that included the third piece of Apollo hardware, the lunar module. Its three-man crew consisted of Commander James McDivitt, Command Module Pilot David Scott, and Lunar Module Pilot Rusty Schweickart. Schweickart has signed on the verso: "Flown/ on Apollo 9/ Rusty/ Schweickart". Known as the Crew Patch Variant, this is a rare patch even if unflown. Excellent.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
