    Description

Apollo 8 Flown Heat Shield Segment in Acrylic Display Directly from the Estate of NASA Legend Chris Kraft, on a Wooden Base, with Certificate of Authenticity. A 0.875" x 1.5" charred plug in a 3" diameter x 1.75" tall acrylic mounted to a 4" x 5.5" x 3" tall walnut base with an engraved plaque reading: "FIRST MANNED LUNAR ORBITAL FLIGHT APOLLO 8 DEC. 21-27, 1968". Apollo 8, with crewmembers Frank Borman, James Lovell, and Bill Anders aboard, performed a number of "firsts" including (as compiled by Kraft):

It was the first manned flight of the Saturn V.
It was the first manned vehicle to leave the earth's gravitational field.
It was the first use of a computer that, combined with the navigation and guidance system, provided total onboard autonomy in inertial space.
It was the first manned vehicle in lunar orbit.
It allowed man his first and closest naked-eye view of another planet.
It was man's first exposure to solar radiation beyond the earth's magnetic field.
It was the first vehicle to rocket out of lunar orbit.
It was the first manned vehicle to reenter the earth's atmosphere from another planet. (Flight. My Life in Mission Control by Chris Kraft, page 301, New York: Dutton, 2001)

This is the first time Heritage has been privileged to offer this style of Apollo 8 heat shield display, by far the nicest we've encountered. Likely only a few were produced for top executives. A prize addition to any collection. Excellent. This item was kept by Kraft in the west bookshelf of his office at home.

"I went home drained, to a late Christmas Eve with Betty Anne and the children. There had never been a Christmas like it for the Krafts, nor would there be another to equal it. We weren't alone. Christmas Eve and Apollo 8 were uniquely inspiring to Earth's citizens, wherever and whoever they were." (Flight. My Life in Mission Control by Chris Kraft, page 300, New York: Dutton, 2001)

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
