    Description

One of only two plate blocks carried on the mission!

Apollo 8 Flown and Crew-Signed "Gemini Four" Plate Block, with Two Letters of Provenance from Mission Commander Frank Borman. A plate block of four- two se-tenant pairs of the Gemini 4 EVA stamps, signed in black felt tips" "James Lovell", "Bill Anders", and "Frank Borman". Included with the stamps are two 8" x 10.5" letters signed by Frank Borman. The first, on NASA letterhead to Mrs. Bernard Sakowitz, reads, in full:

    "Dear Ann:

"I am enclosing the stamps that I carried for you around the moon on Apollo VIII. I am sorry it has taken so long to get them autographed but we finally made the grade this morning. The stamps that you sent along to be autographed by the Apollo XI crew are in the mill. I'm also enclosing a little 'To Whom it May Concern' statement that might prove useful in authenticating these particular stamps.

"Hope you and Bernard are fine. We've been following your travels and I think you have covered more ground in the last few months than Apollo VIII did!"

The second, on plain paper, reads:

    "TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

"This is to certify that the four stamped blocks #29312-1 were carried around the moon on Apollo VIII, December 21 through December 27, 1968. The four stamps are one-half of the total of eight carried on the mission."

One cannot understate the rarity and importance of this plate block, one of only two carried on man's first visit to the moon! Incredible provenance. Letters with folds, stamps excellent. From the collection of Robert T. Sakowitz.
