Ex. Gene Cernan with Diamond inset and handwritten provenance

Apollo 17 Flown MS63 NGC Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number F4, Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander Gene Cernan, with Handwritten and Signed Letter of Certification. This 35mm sterling silver medal was one of only eighty flown aboard Apollo 17, December 7-19, 1972, with crewmembers Gene Cernan, Ron Evans, and Harrison Schmitt. A total of 300 were minted to commemorate this sixth and final lunar landing of the NASA program. The obverse features the mission insignia depicting the head of the Greek god Apollo, a U.S. flag (one of the stars has a diamond inset) and eagle, the moon, and the surnames of crewmembers. The mission dates are engraved on the reverse with the phrase "The Beginning". The serial number and sterling and Robbins hallmarks are on the rim. This is the rarest, and arguably the most beautiful design of all Apollo Robbins medals. A Select Uncirculated example with handwritten provenance from the mission commander.

Included with this lot is a handwritten and signed Letter of Certification from Cernan on his personal letterhead stating, in full: "I hereby confirm and certify that Apollo XVII Silver Robbins Medallion, serial number F4, is one that was flown to the moon with me aboard the mission December 7-19, 1972. Furthermore, it has been in our family's possession since the mission. Eugene A. Cernan. Commander Apollo XVII".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
