"Trapped within the remaining tape is lunar dust..."

Apollo 16 Lunar Module Flown Lunar Orbit Monitor Charts (Two) Bearing Lunar Dust, Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Charlie Duke, Certified and Signed, with Signed LOA. Two separate charts, numbers one and twenty-four (first and last), 10.5" x 15.5" overall, taped together on the verso. Titled on the first: "Orbit Monitor Chart Apollo 16" with a Part number of "SKB 32100122-384" and serial number "1002". These were used by Duke and Young to monitor the flight path during their descent to the lunar surface. Duke has drawn an arrow and noted: "Orbital Flight Path" on chart twenty-four. He has written at the top of chart one: "The Lunar Navigational Chart/ Accompanied John Young and Myself/ to the Lunar Surface on Board 'Orion'/ April 20-23, 1972/ Charles M. Duke Jr." There are two identical 2.75" square labels, one on the front of the holder this is in, and one on the verso of the charts. Titled "Apollo 16 Lunar Surface Artifact," they bear Duke's signature and detailed information on the provenance of the charts. On the verso, there is a small amount of lunar dust trapped beneath some original tape, from its time on the surface of the moon. One of the finest LM-flown relics we've had the privilege to offer. Fine condition. From the Steven R. Belasco Collection of Space Memorabilia.

Included with this lot is a signed 2000-dated Letter of Authenticity on his personal letterhead stating, in full: "This Is To Certify that the accompanying Apollo 16 Lunar Orbit Monitor Chart, bearing lunar dust, was flown aboard our Lunar Module Orion to the Descartes Highlands of the Moon, where it landed on April 20, 1972. It then spent the next 71 hours within the Orion on the surface of the Moon! These particular plates (numbers 1 and 24) show the starting and ending points of the Orion's orbital track across the Moon's surface. John Young and I used them to monitor our flight path during our historic descent to mankind's fifth lunar landing! The back of this chart originally had exposed tape stuck to it. Trapped within the remaining tape is lunar dust, which entered the Orion through our open hatch, and then inadvertently got stuck onto the tape-covered chart! The excess tape has recently been trimmed away, revealing the newly-exposed lunar dust underneath! Each Astronaut was permitted to keep disposable items as personal mementos, and I chose to include this chart among mine. It has remained a treasured part of my personal space collection for the last twenty-eight years, since my return from the Moon in April, 1972. Today, this chart is among the finest astronaut flight-certified artifacts on Earth ever carried by mankind to the surface of another world!" Also included are two color snapshots of Duke holding this item.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
