    Description

"...spent 71 hours on the surface of the Moon."

Apollo 16 Lunar Module Flown Custom 14K Gold Crescent Moon Pin with Three Moonstones Gifted by Mission Lunar Module Pilot Charlie Duke to His Mother, with Illustrated Hand-Notated Letter of Certification, Handwritten and Signed Letter of Authenticity, and PPK Documentation. A 1.875" x 1.125" pin of a unique design- a crescent moon with "XVI", the earth, the mission trajectory, and three moonstones. This is one of three identical items custom-made by Corrigan's Jewelers in Houston. Duke carried to the lunar surface for the ladies in his life- his mother, sister, and wife. Extensive documentation including a copy of his Lunar PPK list and a two-page handwritten letter will accompany the pin and its deluxe jewelry case. This letter closes with: "This particular pin which is in your possession was the one I presented to my mother upon my return from the moon. She wore it on many occasions, including an event at the South Carolina State House. The pin has been in our family since the Apollo XVI mission. I am now transferring it to your care. May this remind you of the epic days of Apollo." An epic item sure to garner much attention in this auction.

Included with this lot is a Photo COA signed and notated by Duke stating, in full:

"1972 Lunar Surface Flown Custom Apollo 16 Gold and Moonstone Ladies Pin Presented by Apollo 16 lunar module pilot Charlie Duke to his mother upon the return from the mission. 47mm at its widest. 6.6 grams total weight Ex. Charlie Duke (Apollo 16 lunar module pilot, 10th human to walk on the Moon)

"This is one of three identical pins that Charlie Duke and his wife Dotty designed as special mementos of the Apollo 16 mission for Charlie's mother, sister and Dotty. Corrigan's jewelry of Houston, Texas fabricated the pins for the Duke's. All three pins were flown aboard the Apollo 16 mission April 16-27, 1972. They were stowed in Charlie's lunar module Personal Preference Kit (PPK) aboard Orion, the lunar module, where they spent 71 hours on the surface of the Moon.

"The design was intended to capture the spirit of Apollo. The crescent is representative of the Moon, the mission's destination. The three moonstones signify both the mission's three member crew, and the stars that make up the belt in the constellation of Orion, for which the lunar module was named. The symbol that looks like a fish is to reflect the trajectory of Apollo from the Earth to the Moon and return. The XVI is for the mission number and the circle on the left is the Earth."

"This is a true and accurate image and description of the pin that I took to the lunar surface for my mother aboard Apollo 16 that is further described in detail in the certification letter to Howard Weinberger dated 9-03-2007. [signed] Charlie Duke Apollo 16 LMP".
