    Description

Flown to the surface of the moon.

Apollo 14 Lunar Module Flown American Flag Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Edgar Mitchell, Signed and Certified, with Signed LOA. A 6" x 4" cloth U.S. flag that was carried aboard the Lunar Module Antares all the way to the surface of the moon on February 5, 1971, where it remained for more than thirty-three hours. Apollo 14 launched on January 31, 1971, with crewmembers Alan Shepard, Stuart Roosa, and Ed Mitchell aboard. It was the third successful lunar landing mission, gathering approximately one hundred pounds of moon rocks and performing various surface experiments (including how far a golf ball could be driven on the moon). They returned to Earth, landing in the Pacific Ocean, on February 9, 1971. Dr. Mitchell has signed on the two lower white stripes: "Flown to the Lunar Surface aboard Antares/ on Apollo 14/ Edgar Mitchell Apollo 14 LMP". Items flown to the moon's surface are extremely desirable to collectors. Excellent condition.

Included with this lot is a signed letter of authenticity on his personal letterhead, stating (in part): "This document certifies that the accompanying miniature United States flag (4 x 6 inches) was flown to the lunar surface aboard Antares on February 5th and 6th, 1971 and was carried in my personal preference kit (PPK) during the Apollo 14 mission."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
