    Description

Apollo 13 Flown MS69 NGC Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 324, Originally from the Personal Collection of Astronaut Charlie Duke, with Handwritten and Signed Letter of Certification. A stunning 32mm sterling silver medal. Due to the last minute substitution of Swigert for Mattingly and the problems that prohibited Apollo 13 from accomplishing its mission, all of the original flown medallions were melted down. This is one of 404 newly-designed sterling silver medallions that were struck from the flown metal. The design features the mission insignia depicting the name of the mission, three of Apollo's chariot horses flying toward the Moon, and the slogan "Ex Luna, Scientia" ("from the moon, knowledge"). The reverse features the names of the crewmembers, the modules, Aquarius (lunar) and Odyssey (command), the engraved dates of launch and return, the serial number, and the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. A beautiful Superb Gem Uncirculated medal; it would be difficult to imagine a nicer example.

Included in this lot is a handwritten and signed Letter of Certification on Duke's letterhead stating, in full: "I hereby certify that Apollo 13 silver Robbins medal, serial number 324, was one that was flown aboard that dramatic mission from April 11-17, 1970. I served as the backup lunar module pilot on this mission. About a week before the flight, I got sick with the measles which resulted in Ken Mattingly being removed from the flight. Jack Swigert from the backup crew took his place. When the oxygen tank exploded, Young, Mattingly, and I rushed to Mission Control. We spent the next thirty five hours there or in the Simulator helping to recover the crew. As a member of the Astronaut Office, I was permitted to purchase this flown medal. It has been in my possession and a part of my personal collection of space artifacts since receiving it shortly after the mission. Charles M. Duke, Jr. Apollo 13 Backup Lunar Module Pilot. Apollo 16 Lunar Module Pilot."
