    Description

Apollo 13 Flown American Flag on a Crew-Signed Certificate, Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Command Module Pilot Jack Swigert, with Letter of Authenticity Signed by His Sister. This 5.75" x 4" cloth U.S. flag has been lightly mounted to a heavy 10" x 12" certificate with the following printed statement: "This flag was on board Apollo XIII during its flight and emergency return to Earth/ APOLLO XIII/ April 11-17, 1970/ Lowell - Swigert - Haise". Lovell has signed this flag: "On board Apollo 13 Spacecraft/ James Lovell". The certificate bears the signatures of all three crewmembers- "James Lovell", "Jack Swigert", and "Fred Haise" just above the mission insignia. Because Apollo 13 followed a free-return trajectory, its altitude over the far side of the moon was about sixty miles higher than any other Apollo mission. This absolute altitude record for a manned spacecraft has never been broken, so you will not find an American flag that has flown farther from the earth than this one. Or, find a nicer example. Excellent.

Included with this lot is a Letter of Authenticity signed by Virginia Swigert from Nate D. Sanders Auctions letterhead stating, in full: "I certify that this Apollo 13 Flown American Flag signed by the Crew was personally owned by Jack Swigert and was flown aboard the near-disastrous Apollo 13 mission to the moon. Printed 6" x 4" fabric flag accompanied the astronauts on the Apollo 13 mission, the third of the Apollo lunar missions, that was aborted after an oxygen tank exploded, though each of the astronauts returned safely to earth. Flag is affixed to an official NASA certificate with the Apollo 13 printed insignia and reading: 'This flag was on board Apollo XIII during its flight and Emergency Return to Earth.' Certificate is signed, 'Jim Lovell', 'Jack Swigert' and 'Fred Haise'. Certificate measures 10" x 12". The Flag remained in Jack Swigert's estate until its consignment to Nate D. Sanders Auctions."
