Apollo 13 Crew-Signed (by Four, with Swigert) "Type Two" Insurance Cover Originally from the Personal Collection of Astronaut Walt Cunningham, Signed and Certified. A philatelic cover with the 6¢ "Flag" stamp affixed, bearing a pictorial machine cancellation from Kennedy Space Center dated April 11, 1970, the day that Apollo 13 was launched. The color cachet features the mission insignia with the crew surnames below along with an astronaut pin. It has been signed in black felt tip in the center: "James Lovell" (cancellation touches his signature), "Ken Mattingly", "Jack Swigert", and "Fred Haise". All the Apollo 13 insurance covers were signed more than a week prior to the mission and therefore bear the signature of Ken Mattingly; he was pulled from the mission at the last minute because of his exposure to German measles and there was no time for another set of covers to be produced. This one was signed later by Jack Swigert who replaced Mattingly, thus reflecting the actual flown crew. Signed on the verso: "From my personal collection/ Walt Cunningham/ Apollo 7". Especially desirable as such. Excellent condition. From the Steven R. Belasco Collection of Space Memorabilia.

Included with this lot is a small printed certificate with the text: "Walter Cunningham acknowledges with appreciation your purchase from his personal collection."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
