Pete Conrad: "And we're looking for the Snowman"

Apollo 12 Topographical Landing Site Map Signed by and Directly from the Family Collection of Mission Command Module Pilot Richard Gordon. A 14" x 16" monocolor molded plastic high relief topo map oriented so that the legendary "Snowman" target landing site for Apollo 12 is visible with the site of Surveyor III marked as well as Ellipse Center. Gordon has signed it in black felt tip: "'The Snowman'/ Apollo XII's target/ Richard Gordon/ CMP". The "Snowman" was a cluster of lunar craters that, when viewed from Conrad and Bean's approach, resembled a fat snowman with the Surveyor craft right in the "belly" crater. It was unknown whether this landmark would be visible to the astronauts in the LM, but as they took their first view of the lunar landscape, Conrad told Bean: "I think I see my crater, I'm not sure." Then he caught sight of it and blurted out: "There it is! Son-of-a-gun, right down the middle of the road!" After a brilliant landing, they weren't sure exactly where they were in relationship to the Surveyor Crater rim and it was Gordon in the CSM that pinpointed their location, telling Mission Control: "He's on the Surveyor Crater! He's about a fourth of the Surveyor Crater diameter to the north-west ... I'll tell you, he's the only thing that casts a shadow down there." A very interesting and unique piece, perfect for display. It might be possible to add Alan Bean's signature and comments at a show or private signing. Excellent.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
