    Description

Serial Number Four with diamond. Originally from Pete Conrad's collection.

Apollo 12 Flown Silver Robbins Medallion Pin with Diamond Directly from Jim Rathmann Collection, Serial Number 4. Originally presented to Kay Rathmann by Apollo 12 Commander Charles Conrad. This 32mm silver medal was one of 262 flown to the moon aboard Apollo 12, November 14-24, 1969, with crewmembers Pete Conrad, Dick Gordon, and Alan Bean. It is one of only twenty-two of the silver medals set with a diamond at the lunar landing site and made into a pin. The obverse of the medal features the mission insignia depicting a clipper ship arriving at the moon (it was an all-Navy crew), trailing fire and flying the U.S. flag. There are four stars in the background. The reverse has the dates of the mission along with the serial number. It does not have a sterling hallmark as the first eighty-two of these medals were struck from silver recovered from a 1715 Spanish treasure ship. Seldom offered in this form. Generally excellent condition.

It was actually Jim Rathmann who helped Pete Conrad obtain the silver from the 1715 Plate Fleet wrecks to strike the first eighty-two of these medals. For more information from Robbins expert Howard Weinberger on the Apollo 12 (and Apollo 15) "Treasure Medals," please click on this link.
