    Description

Apollo 11: U.S. Flag Flown over the Capitol on July 20, 1969, Presented to Neil Armstrong With Transmittal Certificate Signed by J. George Stewart, Architect of the Capitol, Directly From The Armstrong Family Collection™, Certified by Collectibles Authentication Guaranty With Photo Certificate. The flag flown over the U.S. Capitol building the day Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. The 5' x 8' flag was manufactured by Dettra Flag Company, Inc. and is sold with the original cardboard box of issue. The box lid is marked in blue ink "Neal [sic] Armstrong" and again in red marker "Com. Neal [sic] Armstrong". The flag is accompanied by a one-page typed letter on Architect of the Capitol letterhead, dated July 21, 1969, to Ohio Representative William M. McCulloch and reads in full:

"My dear Congressman McCulloch: / This is to certify that the accompanying / flag was flown over the United States Capitol / on July 20, 1969, the day the Apollo 11 Astronauts / landed and walked on the moon. / I understand that you will present this flag to / Mr. Neil Armstrong, Commander of Apollo 11 and / the first man to step on the surface of the Moon. / Sincerely yours, / J. George Stewart."

The certificate retains the original transmittal envelope. The lot is accompanied by a brochure from Dettra Flag Company titled "Our Flag Display it! Respect it!", which details the do's and don'ts of proper flag display. The certificate has old, smoothed fold creases and some minor wrinkling to the paper, but is generally in excellent condition. The brochure is likewise in excellent condition. Both the certificate and brochure are sealed in a numbered archival holder. The flag shows no wear and the box displays some scuffing and wear at the corners. This lot will include an encapsulated CAG Photo Certificate with a Statement of Provenance signed by Neil Armstrong's sons, Rick and Mark.
