The "dark side"Apollo 11: Neil Armstrong Hand-Drawn and Signed Large Diagram Depicting the Flight and Landing on the Moon, with Zarelli LOA, in Framed Display. A 17.5" x 11.25" (sight size) sheet of cream-colored paper on which Armstrong has drawn a flight plan and signed: "Neil Armstrong", all in black ink. This drawing by Armstrong diagrams the location of Apollo 11's landing on the moon. It was created when Armstrong, the friend of a set designer working on a play titled Darkside in Cincinnati, Ohio, was asked to comment on the role the "dark side of the moon" played in the 1969 moon landing. Armstrong explained that the planned landing location was chosen in order to remain in sunlight for as long as possible to conduct experiments. This drawing clearly depicts the earth, sun, and moon, and the notations within to point out the planned landing spot at Tranquility Base (15 degrees off the dark side) and the 12 degrees of difference between the planned location and the actual landing spot. The split-second decision to change the touchdown point was due to the rockiness of the lunar surface- a very risky decision as at the point of landing the Lunar Module Eagle had just about 25 seconds of fuel remaining. At the request of the original owner, the director of that play, Armstrong signed the drawing. Matted and framed to an overall 21" x 15". This is one of the most exciting Apollo 11 pieces Heritage has ever offered. Unique in its purpose and detail, it would be a centerpiece of any Space collection. Museum-worthy. A surface tear at lower left affects nothing, frame with a few dings, overall very fine.
Included with this lot is a 2013-dated Letter of Authenticity signed by Steve Zarelli stating, in part: "...In my opinion, the above-mentioned signature on this item is authentic. It is also my opinion the notations are in the hand of Neil Armstrong..."
