Signed by the crew and flown to the moon on Apollo 11.

Apollo 11 Flown Crew-Signed Commemorative Cover, Number EEA-48, Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin, Certified. A color-cacheted "NASA Manned Spacecraft Center Stamp Club Official Commemorative Cover of the First Manned Lunar Exploration" signed "Neil Armstrong", "Michael Collins", and "Buzz Aldrin" to the right of the cachet. Aldrin has written at upper left: "Carried to the moon on Apollo 11" and numbered it "EEA-48. This cover flew to the moon on one of mankind's greatest adventures, the first manned lunar landing mission. Affixed to the cover is a 6¢ "Flag" stamp with an August 11, 1969, cancellation at Webster, Texas. Stamped beneath the cancellation is the text: "Delayed In Quarantine At/ Lunar Receiving Laboratory/ M.S.C. - Houston, Texas". Apollo 11 splashed down on earth on July 24 at which point, the equipment, and astronauts from the spacecraft were quarantined. As soon as this cover was released, it was taken to the nearest post office for cancellation. This is the ultimate for any collection of space-related philatelic covers. Excellent condition. From the Steven R. Belasco Collection of Space Memorabilia.

Space historian Howard Weinberger has done extensive research on these Apollo 11 flown covers. He has confirmed that there were a total of 214 covers flown. Of the three different cachet designs known, the majority were of this NASA Manned Spacecraft Center variety. The 214 flown covers were shared among the crew in the following breakdown: Armstrong- 47; Collins- 63; and Aldrin- 104. Weinberger, analyzing their collectability, states: "... the flown covers really do exemplify the ideal rarity because they incorporate all of the desired elements: the commemorative aspect, the flown status, the quarantine time, the crew signatures and the scarcity of only 214 having existed." A great opportunity for the astute collector.

Included with this lot is a 1978-dated legal document titled: "Declaration Re Gift" signed "Edwin E. Aldrin Jr" and "Joan Aldrin" regarding the fact that this cover was originally gifted to Aldrin's older sister, Madeline. It reads, in full: "We, EDWIN EUGENE ALDRIN, JR. and JOAN ALDRIN, hereby declare:
    1. That we were the owners of all the rights, title and interest in 104 certain "Official Commemorative Covers", with a cancelled stamp thereon which were carried on the flight of Apollo 11 to the moon.
    2. That for calendar year 1978 we made a gift of one such 'Official Commemorative Cover', with a cancelled stamp thereon (No. EFA-48), a copy of which is attached hereto and marked Exhibit 'A', to Madeline Crowell.
    3. That it was estimated that the aforementioned 'Cover' given to Madeline Crowell, Exhibit 'A' hereto, had a value of Six Thousand Dollars ($6,000.00); therefore, we filed neither a federal nor a state gift tax return relating to this gift (the annual gift tax exclusion of Six Thousand Dollars ($6,000.00) resulting in our net taxable gift to Madeline Crowell of zero).
    4. We declare under penalty of perjury that the foregoing is true and correct.
Executed at Los Angeles, California, this 28th day of ' December, 1978. "
The original envelope of transmittal is also present.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
